Cadillac Repair: ride height, ebay motors, auto recycler

Question
I have a 86 fleetwood.  4.1L FWD if this helps.  My back end is riding pretty low.  the driver side rear is VERY low.  Would this be a sensor problem or the strut itself?  I looked around for the sensor but I cant find it.  Do you know where this is?  I found the air hose going into the strut and pulled it off.  there was pressure in there.  the front end looks a little high to me also.  any help on this would be very much appreciated.  thnx in advance.

Answer
Hi Mike, You might have several things going on here. My dad also had an '86 that needed a new height sensor and is located above the LR control arm with a link that attaches to the arm. Maybe the link rusted apart. To test place at least 300lbs or have several people sit on the open trunk edge and with the key on listen for the pump to start after 1 minuit. If the pump doesn't start you need to test the pump to see if it can work and if not test to find out why. Then test the height sensor. Once the pump works then you will know if the struts can hold air, if the pump is weak or  if there is a leak somewhere in the lines. While under the car check for a broken spring or alot of out comming from the LR strut which would mean if also needs replaceing. Parts will get expensive and would recommend getting them used from a junk yard/auto recycler except the struts which should be new. Getting a GM shop manual for your car would definitely help because most auto books don't cover the level ride system. Try your local library or ebay motors under manuals then 1986 Cadillac. If the rear end is sitting low then the front end will be higher than normal. Hope that helps. Bill
