Cadillac Repair: Cadillac cooling fan fault, fan module, ebay

Question
Hi, my 89 eldorado will display "cooling fan fault" when it is running idle with the a/c on.  Could you tell me how to bypass this or what to replace?  The fans work fine.  My guess would be a voltage problem somewhere of fan speed maybe.
Thanks,
Drew

Answer
Hi Drew, When that message pops up it usually means that the cooling fan module is bad or one fan doen't turn. It could also mean that a fan is useing too many amp to start or run. You will need to test the amps draw when each motor starts to turn and while they are running. If the motors require 40A or more then that could be a cause of the message or if they require more than 8a small and 12A large to run then that will turn on the message. If the motors have run for along time this way then the cooling fan module will need replaceing also and is located behind the grill up top near the LH headlamp. There is a real good test sequence in the Caddy shop manual that explains the whole process but would require alot of typing to explain. If unsure what to do then get it to the shop or get a GM Caddy shop manual. Maybe your library has one or order from ebay. Hope that helps. Bill
