Question -
The digital fuel guage on my 2000 Cadillac Sedan DeVille constantly reads full when I know it isn't.  I've already had the entire dashboard display replaced at considerable expense.  It seemed to work ok for a couple of weeks and now it's doing the same thing.  The mechanic insists that the problem is not in the fuel tank.  I'm not so sure.  Can you help?  Thanks
Answer -
Tests have to be performed on the fuel display circuit before any conclusion can be made.

Apparently your mechanic did not perform ALL of the appropriate tets and somply made a GUESS of which was apparently wrong. However, It IS possible that the second display has the same problem.

WHERE did you get the second display FROM ?.

The display came from the same model and year of Cadillac in a salvage yard.  It sure could be the same problem, but it worked normally for a couple of weeks before it began to show full all the time.  Wouldn't that indicate there is more to it?  The mechanic appears to have done a number of computer tests before the diagnosed the problem as being in the display, rather than in the unit in the gas tank.  The gas tank unit now seems to be the more likely culprit I guess.  Thanks for your help and any other help you can provide.  Stan

Most reputable knowledgeable professional automotive technicians know BETTER than to suggest JUNK YARD electronic components as there is NO WAY to determine how long this component has set out in the yard without being used of which causes excessive moisture buildup and corrosion due to weathering of the internal electronic components.

IF your mechanic suggested that you obtain a JUNK YARD electronic component, He should be ashamed of himself.

I have personally had to resolve numerous problems such as yours and other problems when JUNK YARD electric components were utilized.

If you want to gamble on these weather exposed, non-tested components this is obviously your choice to do so.

This is WHY I always ask WHERE the USED electronic part came from, as I have had to many cars come into my facility who installed junk yard parts only to find out after doing extensive diagnostics that the part is no good or has failed shortly after installation because it had the identical component in the junk yard component that failed in the original part.

No fiction, Just professional fact.

If I have offended you, I apologize. I just wanted to give you the facts about these kind of parts.

Cadillac has had display problems for YEARS and this is ONE of the reasons WHY I do NOT recommend or even suggest junk yard parts. You most likely have the same identical problem with this display as you had with the original.

Let's say that there is a diode in the fuel data display that is very common to failure over a period of use. Your display came to the pint of this diode failure.

You NOW go buy a JUNK YARD display that has the IDENTICAL DIODE in it and now this diode has reached it point of failure.

This is WHY you ALWAYS purchase a REBUILT, NEW or have your display sent out to the manufacturer of the disply so that they can REPLACE the faulty components that cause the displays to fail.

Although this is NOT considered a RECALL. WHY do you think that they have RECALLS on vehicles ?. It is to replace a faulty component that has a high failure rate.

IF the mechanic did ALL the tests properly and his professional conclusion was a faulty display, I DOUBT that he suggested that you buy a JUNK YARD display.

NEVER EVER buy JUNK YARD electronic components.
