Cadillac Repair: hard shifting, shift cable, binding problem

Question
1995 deville    shift lever moves very in cold weather [below 40 degrees]  need to use both hands to move shift lever when at 20 degrees. had shift cable replaced but same trouble.  disconnected transmission linkage but same problem.  shifts easier after heater is run for a while but still shifts hard

Answer
Disconnect the shift cable at the transmission mounting and see if the gear shift operates easily and smoothly. If it DOES your problem is either in the transmission or there is a binding problem within the selector switch at the transmission mounting.

If the shift lever is still HARD to operate thru the gears with the cable OFF the transmission then your problem may be caused by a mis-routed shift cable and or a problem within the shift mechanism or you may have a faulty cable or you MIGHT be lucky if you remove the cable and lubricate the inside of the cable housing with some light weight cable grease or similar product.
