I have a 1995 Cadillac Deville.  Earlier the "service engine soon" light came on.  Now the air conditioner will not work. It reads "very low refrigerant/air compressor off" and I can't get the air conditioner to accept freon.  Can you help?
Do I need to access air conditioner codes and if so, how?
Answer -
What your most likely fault is that you have a leak within the A/C system which is why the indicator lights are ON.

What you need to do is to evacuate the A/C system of the remaining, if any, freon using a vacuum pump and a set of A/C gages as the gages will indicate by a loos of vacuum dropping off on the low pressure side of the gages.

Although NOT recommended, You can engage the A/C compressor and install a can or 2 of freon into the system and then use an electronic leak detector in order to locate from where the leak is coming from.

Once you locate and repair the leak, You MUST evacuate the atmospheric air from the system and rechage the system with the EXACT amount of freon as well as any amount of refrigerant oil that may have been lost from the system due to the leak.

NO, You do NOT need to access the A/C codes, As you already know you are LOW on freon of which the A/C gages will verify the LOW FREON condition.

The compressor won't engage; what now?

Answer
1. Start the engine.

2. Set the controls for A/C and put on HIGH speed blower.

3. Locate the LOW PRESSURE switch that has 2 wires in an electrical connector and is mounted on the side near the top of the ACCUMULATOR (receiver/drier) and disconnect the 2 wire electrical connector. Using a  12 volt test light probe the BROWN wire in the electrical connector to make sure you have battery voltage. If you DO, proceed to step # 3. If you do NOT, STOP HERE and let me know.

3. Using a jumper wire jumper the 2 wires together that are inside of this 2 wire electrical connector and see if the compressor now runs.

If it DOES, this is where you need to have a set of A/C gages to see what the pressures are at on the LOW and HIGH sides as you could have EITHER a leak in the system that will necessitate the former said procedure.

OR, You could have a faulty LOW PRESSURE switch and if you do NOT have a set of A/C gages to KNOW EXACTLY what pressures you have in the system and you go adding more freon to the system and you overfill it you can DESTROY the compressor and or EXPLODE one of the A/C hoses and freon is very unforgiving and will cause severe frost bite to any skin it touches and PERMANENT BLINDNESS if you get it in your eyes.

This is NOT a repair or diagnostic process that you should do unless you have the KNOWKEDGE and EQUIPMENT to do this repair.
