Cadillac Repair: Transmission, vacuum modulator, modulator valve

Question
I hope you can help me. My friend has a 93 Mercury Tempo automatic transmission. Yesterday she pulled into the parking lot. Saying her car wouldnt go faster than 30km/h but was up around 4000rpm. We opened the hood and transmission fluid was everywhere, and she has just come off the highway (45min trip at around 110km/h). Checked the dipstick for transmission and it was empty. What could be the case? Can u help?

Answer
Did you check for an obvious external leak of trans fluid ?. If the transmission has a vacuum modulator with a vacuum line attached to it there is a high probability that there is a fault in the modulator causing trans fluid to be sucked thru the modulator valve and into the engine.
