Cadillac Repair: Code 52 ECM Memory Reset, cadillac seville, memory reset

Question
I have a '88 Cadillac Seville 4.5L (65,000 miles) that ocassionally displays the Engine Control System light.  The light comes on sometimes while driving and usually goes off within a few minutes.

I borrowed a code reader to find out what the problem is.  The code is 52 - ECM Memory Reset.  What does this mean?  I'm stumped.

Thank you.

Answer
What it simply means is that at some point in time the battery was disconnected from the vehicle and power was lost to the computer.

OK do this procedure:

1. turn the ignition key to the ON position. Do NOT start the engine.

2. Simultaneously push the OFF and WARMER buttons on the A/C-Heater control head.

3. as soon as you see any numbers push the LO button.

4. When you see the word ECM push the HI button.

5. When you see words ECM DATA push the LO button.

6. When you see the words ECM INPUTS push the LO button.

7. When you see the words ECM OUTPUTS push the LO button.

8. When you see the words ECM OVERRIDES push the LO button.

9. When you see the words ECM CLEAR CODES push and HOLD
the HI button for 3 seconds and then release the HI
button and turn OFF the ignition switch.

This should CLEAR the code 52 from the computer and the CHECK ENGINE light(s) will NOT come back ON displaying the code 52.
