Cadillac Repair: Surging, torque converter clutch, clutch pedal

Question
Bill,
Have a 1991 Cad DeVille (4.9L). When coming to a stop (below 15 mph)car will begin to surge repeatedly (sometimes violently) until coming to a complete stop.  However, will only do this 50% of the time. Other times the stop will be completely normal (smooth).  Several mechanics have been unable to find cause...thanks for your help..Dave

Answer
Hi David, Sounds to me like the torque converter clutch solinoid is starting to go bad and not want to release all the time. If it ever stalled like a manual trans that you didn't push in the clutch pedal before stopping completely then replaceing the solinoid inside the trans will cure the surging. Try shifting the trans to neutral when this happens and if the surge goes away then for sure it is the tcc solinoid that needs to get replaced. Bill
