Cadillac Repair: egr position sensor, cadillac dealership, cadillac deville

Question
hello, i had my 1997 cadillac deville sedan put on the computer it read that i needed a egr positon sensor when i called the local cadillac dealership they said they never heard of it..please help me so i can get my car fix...

Answer
Hi Sharon, I've got to admit that I haven't heard that one before eithor. But the newer style EGR valves have the ability to tell the computor how far open they are thats why they set differant types of codes than years past. Looking in the shop manual it shows the egr valve to have the position sensor inside the valve and you need to replace the complete EGR valve to replace the sensor. If memory serves the valve might be in the neighborhood of $200 plus labor to install it so without knowing what the code was by number and testing the valve operation it could be a bad EGR valve with internal sensor, wiring or computor problem. Usually when I had to replace an EGR valve it was because the valve didn't open far enough not that the sensor was bad. But if the diagnosis was a bad EGR sensor then replacing the EGR valve should fix the problem and turn off the light. Now you know what to tell the parts person. Bill
