Cadillac Repair: fuel assembly recall, filler tube, fuelpump

Question
Hi Bill (1997 sls--67,000)
There was a recent recall on the fuel intake lines.  The change was from pastic to stainless steel.  I had this done and when the car was returned to me the gas tank would pop like a can lid pops when you press on it.  This would happen when I shut the engine down and started walking away from the vehicle.  I also started to notice the smell of gas from the rear of the vehicle. The car started to stale on the highway so I brought it to the dealer and they told me I had two bad sensores as well as an oxy sensor bad.  At the time I couldn't leave the car and I had my local mech. check the computer and all he saw was the oxy sensor bad.  My fuelpump went 2 minutes latter. I do not trust my local cady shop and had the local guy do the repairs.  During the replacement of the fuel pump it was found that my filler tube was corroded at the connection to the tank.  My question is: 1. Can the fuel pump be damage during the replacement of the fuel intake assembly and why the popping noice and gas smell after the upgrade? 2. have you any idea why the filler tube would corrode and could this be why the fuel pump died?  Also is there a better replacement for the front rottors on this car as they need to be replaced?

Thanks Steve

Answer
Hi Steve, Sorry to hear that you had a bad experriance with the recall. I am not famillar with what is supposed to be done but because you had troubles after the recall then I feel that the dealer should make things right by paying some or all of the repair costs. After all the car ran ok before and then after they worked on it is when the problems started and a recall repair is done free of charge. Call and talk to the service manager and see what he/she will do for you. If you don't get any satisfaction then call the caddy zone office in your area and explain the situation rationally. If you start demanding or raiseing your voice too much then they will be turned off but with kind words the zone might cover the repairs that were done by your mechanic and have the dealer fix the car for free to your satisfaction as well as repremend the manager and dealer owner. Back in '00 when with Caddy there was a problem with the pressure relief solinoid on the radiator and if it was malfunctioning closed it could cause the tank to pop and the fuel pump to go bad. Maybe the line is restricted that was installed. If there isn't anywhere for the pressure to vent from the tank the fuel will be forced out somewhere or if the sending unit was replaced maybe the seal was misinstalled. Filler tubes can corrode due to age and envirorment issues like salt exposure. Alot of the metal has been galvanized or they use stainless steel such as the exhausts but sometimes it just rusts...bees that way. But that shouldn't have killed the fuel pump. If you investigate rotor prices you will find a range of prices from the cheepie ot the OEM original type. What I would recommend is a rotor made by Wagner or Raybestos because of their quality of metal and the design of the rotor holes or cooling fins. The cheap ones might last the length of the brake pads or they could warp in short order because the cooling fins aren't designed to disapate the heat through the rotor as well. Hope that answers your questions. Bill
