Cadillac Repair: my 94 sts 4.6 has problems, vehicle speed sensor, digital voltmeter

Question
i have a 94 sts 4.6 northstar. when me car is turned on the rpms will jump from almost 0 to 1200 until it stalls out. if i was to push on the gas to hard then it seems as if it is not getting any gas and almost dies until i lift my foot off the gas. the only why to get my car to move is to push slightly on the gas, but still if it is moving it will jerk as if it is losing power or low on gas. with the codes "p024 & p034".

Answer
Hi D, Sounds like you might need to get the sts to the shop for diagnosis but there are a couple things to check before you do. Code P024 refers to the vehicle speed sensor on the trans. tail shaft housing. Make sure it is plugged in. If it is you will need to get a scan tool or digital voltmeter to diagnos if it is producing an AC volt signal. You could have a bad wire or sensor problem.
The P034 is a MAP sensor code. It tells the computor the engine vacuum or how hard the engine is working. The sensor could be bad, no vacuum to the sensor or other tests that need to be done.
The engine rpm at start-up could be due to a vacuum leak, bad idle speed control motor, bad tps sensor or the computor lost battery voltage and didn't get relearned.
The stalling could be a relearn problem or restricted fuel filter or weak fuel pump. You will need to hook up a pressure gage to the schrader valve to test.
As you can see there are several possabilities or problem areas but without the propper tester and a manual you could spend alot of money on parts before it runs right. I would suggest taking it in if nothing looks obvious and then you can decide to let the shop repair it or you change the parts after the diagnosis is completed. Sorry I can't be more help. Bill
