Cadillac Repair: steering and suspension, ford taurus gl, wheel bearings

Question
The vehicle is a 1991 Ford Taurus GL V6, 3.o Litre. There is a terrible vibration when I drive, which makes it hard to control. It would level out at 55 mph, but doesn't do that now. There is a scrubbing noise when I make a turn. The tires are not worn excessively or unvenly. I don't know if this is a do-it-yourselfer or needs a shark. Several terms come to mind: tie-rod ends, alignment, brakes....
Can you offer any suggestions? Have I offered enough symptoms?

Thank you for being here.

Answer
Hi, You might want to repost with the Ford person but this is what I would do. 1) Look at and feel the tread for irregularities like feathered edges, bulges in the tires or air pressue lower than 30psi. 2) Raise up the front end on jackstands and with the steering wheel locked grab the tires at the 3 and 9 positions and try to move the tire. Then do the same at 6 and 12. If you get freeplay then look for bad ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings etc. especially if one side moves more han the other. 3)Rotate the tires front to back and see if the problem moves. Balancing the tires would need to be done at the shop. As for the scrubbing noise go to a vacant parking lot and turn the wheel until you hear the noise and then stop the car with the wheel in that position and see where it is rubbing.
These are the easy tests and if nothing shows itself then you will need to take it to the shop for diagnosis. Hope that helps. Happy Holidays. Bill
