Cadillac Repair: Transmission on 1993 Seville STS, vacuum modulator, seville sts

Question
Transmission has gotten stuck in a low gear. Other than buying a new transmission do you have any suggestions of how to fix this problem? I know that in the past I have had a problem with coolant leeking, could this be related? Is there any truth to the belief that a large percentage of transmision problems only require trans fluid change?
Thank You

Answer
Hi Barclay, If you have the northstar system in the seville then there is a good chance one of the shift solinoids has gone bad and testing useing a manual and ohmeter will determine if that is the case. If so then they are sold in pairs and the lower trans pan comes off and then they are removed. If you do some of your own work and can do electrical testing then you should be able to do this yourself. Otherwise have a shop look at it. If the engine is the 4.9 then it is probably tranny time but again have a shop verify that the tv cable is adjusted correctly and the vacuum modulator is hooked up and working properly. Hope that helps. Bill
