Cadillac Repair: belt replacement on 94 cadillac deville, radiator cover, spring tension

i have a 94 deville and the steering wheel lost power, so i look under the hood and the belt is not good lookin it had just split in two. now i have bought a new belt
how do you get the belt on?

Hi Trace, There should be a picture diagram under the hood or on the radiator cover panel that shows belt routeing otherwise it will be in a shop manual that you can get from the auto parts store or library. Then you will need a 1/2" breaker bar the longer the better especially if you have the northstar engine. There is a square on the tensioner to put the bar so if you wind the belt around most of the pulleys, install the bar and pull back against the spring tension and then slip the belt over the last pulley. To help get the belt around the lower pullies it helps to use a long rod with a 90 degree bend on the end. Hope that helps. Bill
