Cadillac Repair: wipers are not working properly, cadillac deville, wiper motor

My wipers has two speeds slow and fast, they no longer can be turned off without cutting off the engine, there is no intermittent or adjustable speed.  Can this be repaired by a novice or does it need to go to a mechanic.  I was told that the problem is in the steering column not the wiper motor.  This is a 1994 Cadillac Deville 4.9

Hi Robert, Sounds like you could have 2 problems here. The fact that the wipers won't park could be the wiper switch in the column or it could be the park switch inside the wiper motor. Also the lack of delay could be the switch or it might be the circuit board. Sometimes however I have seen where the 2 spring contacts under the cover/circuit board loose their tension and strange things like this happen so what I would recommend is removeing the 3 screws from the wiper motor cover and bend the 2 contacts up so you feel some resistance before the cover touches the motor and see if that doesn't fix the problems. If not then taking it to the shop might be necessary. Bill
