Cadillac Repair: Oil Seals, oil leaks, oil seals

Question
Bill, I've got an '84 Eldorado with the 4.1 which runs fine, however it has multiple oil leaks.  Would you be able to give me a ball park figure of what I should expect to pay for the seals to be replaced.

Answer
Hi Terry, Here are the ballpark figures to reseal the engine. You will need to multiply the shop hourly rate by the time for a labor dollar amount. So at $50 an hour it would look like this.
intake manifold: 6.0hrs + $150 parts = $450
oil pan gskt w/rear main seal: 5.9hrs + $40 parts = $340
timing cover gaskets: 4.5hrs + $35 parts = $260
Add an oil change to each operation and coolant flush to the intake and timing cover operation for a more accurate figure. Also make sure to remove and inspect the bottoms of the lifters because when the intake manifold bolts start to loosen up and anti-freeze gets in the oil the lifters will show scuffing or dished out and that means the camshaft lobe is starting to go round and will need to get replaced. If just pitted then replaceing them might be all that is required. That would be the first job I would do unless you have an obvious leak somewhere so you get the most expensive area done first or can decide how you want to deal with the repairs. I.E. repair the engine, replace the engine or sell the car. Hope that helps. Bill
