Cadillac Repair: Engine and transmission, motor manuals, 500cid

Hello Bill,
   I just purchased a 1954 Mercury with a 492 Cu in Cadillac engine and accomodating transmission.
Could you possibly tell me what year GM made the "492" so I would be able to purchase parts. If not could you steer me in the right direction to obtain literature that may contain this information.

P.S. The owner only said it was a 70ish Engine

Hi Bill, I havn't heard of a 492 caddy engine. 425, 472 and 500cid engines are more famillar to me. What I would suggest doing is go down to the local library and around section 618 you will find the Motor Manuals that should have the info you seek. Hope that helps. Bill
