Cadillac Repair: overheating, cadillac fleetwood, coolant temp

Question
I have a 1985 4.1, front-wheel drive Cadillac Fleetwood. It has an overheating problem that I can't seem to fix as yet. Water pump is new, thermostat is new. Head gaskets are good. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
RJ

PS. I understand after having put on new water pump that there is a method to refilling. Don't remember what the procedure was.

Answer
Hi RJ, Since you changed those parts the antifreeze level should be full and the thermostat opens right? Do the cooling fans turn on? Why do you say the engine is overheating? It could be that the coolant temp sensor is bad and out of calibration and reading higher than the actual temp. You need to verify the coolant temp and the best way is with an infra red temp. thermometer. Also if it is in fact overheating does the temp gage show normal and then hot and back to normal. If so then suspect a broken head bolt or stripped threads in the block for the head bolts. The antifreeze level in the rad will try to over flow with-in 1 minuit of start-up with the cap removed if a gasket problem...As for refilling you add a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze and 6 seal tabs. I believe 6 quarts of antifreeze is the correct amount but would have to look it up to be sure. Let me konw if I can be of more help. Bill
