Cadillac Repair: 1991 seville 4 door 182,771miles, volt ohmeter, neutral safety switch

Question
I bought this car 3 days ago, and it ran fine until today. I drove it home from work, and went to the store.. When I came out the car won't start, all the lights where on the dash, the radio plays, windows go up and down, and you could hear the computer click, but no start. When I purchased the car they replaced the battery, and with the new battery they had trouble getting it started. They said the key was the problem... So what is the problem now?

Answer
Hi Marie, If you turn the key and not a sounds is made from the starter then try to start it in neutral to test the neutral safety switch on the trans. Then take whatever other ignition keys you have and try them also. If still no sound then the PASS key system could be the problem especially if it says wait 4 minuits on the climate control display. At this point you have 2 choices 1) get the system tested and install a new ignition lock cylinder and keys in the steering column or 2)measure the resistance of the key pellet with a digital volt ohmeter and go to Radio Shack and buy a 1/4 watt resistor closest to the reading you get. Then below the steering column you will see a bunch of wires and when you find the 2 wire connector with small white wires unplug it and wire in the resistor to the terminals not going in the column and then turning the key will allow it to start. The down side of this repair is then a thief can start your car after busting the steering column but you wll save at least $100 over replaceing the lock cylinder and keys. If the engine turns over but won't start then you will have to test to see if you are missing fuel or spark. Hope that helps. Bill
