Cadillac Repair: cadillac exhaust, spray lubricant, zerk fittings

Question
My dad was a mechanic & has talked about a cadillac that required exhaust lubrication. He says it was the 1956 model and his Texaco lube charts showed zerk fittings in the exhaust system. Can you confirm or offer any information? I'd like to find out for him because everyone thinks he's nuts! Thanks very much. Darla

Answer
Hi Darla, The '56 model is before I was born so I haven't had the oppertunity to work on one yet. Cars that had a carburator had a heat riser valve between the exhast pipe and exhaust manifold that required a spray lubricant periodically to keep it moving freely but maybe on this car it had a grease zerk. Other than that I don't see why anything else in the exhaust system would need to be lubed by a zerk. Let me do some more checking and I will try to find the answer by sunday night. Bill
