Cadillac Repair: Ignition 89 Seville, dash lights, lock cylinder

Question
When I tried to start my car the ignition became stuck in the on position and not started. When I got it to turn back it broke allowing the key to turn from "acc" to "start" position freely. The dash lights stayed on and had to disconnect the battery.Does the lock cylinder need replaced and will I have to remove the steering wheel to do this? Also, with your experience of a Cadillac 4.5L engine, my car is in 95% condition quality at 288,000 miles. What is the likly hood of getting 20,000 more miles?Yes it is the original motor and tranny.

Answer
Hi T.Edwards, Congrats on getting your car to last that many miles without needing an engine or trans. Going another 20,000 ...hmmm....it could go more than that or it could quit after the next mile whos to say at this point but it would be interesting to find out. As for the key turning there is a gear on the end of the lock cyl. that meshes with a gear attached to a rod that goes down to the ignition switch. Usually that rod gear breaks and needs to be replaced. The steering column will have to be disassembled way past the steering wheel and that is a job that alot of people can't do so choose your tech wisely for that job. Keep racking up the miles. Bill
