Cadillac Repair: Oil pressure light, check oil level, gm engines

Question
1997 Cadillac Deville
My oil pressure light comes on when I stop at red lights and the "stop engine" display come on. This does not happen all the time I stop. So,I turn off the car and restart it and it is gone. Also, I noticed my check oil level display has not been coming on. Why why why? I had a tune up and had my oil changed. But it keeps happening. Can it be the oil pressure sensor, pvc, or oil level sensor? Where are they located?  Thanks for all your help and I love reading your advise....

Answer
Hi Shanna, Your engine uses 7.5 quarts of oil after an oil change and you'd think that the lube places would know this. However pull the dipstick and check that the oil level is correct just to be sure. It is possable that a sensor is giving an incorrect reading. GM engines have a higher failure rate with the oil pressure sender so replaceing it might be all that is required. The oil level sensor is located near the oil filter screwed into the side of the pan. The oil pressure sender is also in that area but is in the oil filter adapter housing. It would be good to have someone test the oil pressure especially if the crankshaft/harmonic balancer pulley had been removed and then the light started comming on. Hope that helps and I'm glad to hear that you are getting something out of my posts and enjoy reading them. Bill
