Cadillac Repair: A/C, term suicide, componant

Question
I am looking to recharge my A/C system on my 1996 Cadillac. I am looking for the port to attach my gage and R134a can. I thought I found it but when I hooked up the gage the presure reading was too high for the low presure side of a A/C system. I think it is the high presure side. Please advise as to where the low presure port is.

Thanks,

Don

Answer
Hi Don, A/c work can be dangerous if you don't follow propper procedures. The first thing you need to do is get a gage set that you can hook up to the low side and high side at the same time to see what the pressures are. The low and hi sides have a differant sized fitting so that they can't be hooked up wrong so where you hooked up to...on the accumulator inside the anti freeze overflow tank is the correct spot...so the gage you hooked up was to the correct spot. The fact that the gage reads hi to you means that eithor you have enought freon in the system and need to be looking for other reasons why the a/c isn't cold enough...that's why you are recharging it right?...or you need to read up on what normal pressures should be at a given ambiant temperature. There is a reason people coined the term "suicide hose" to the short hose between the freon can and the low side chargeing port because people can add too much freon unknowingly and cause a hose or componant to rupture and in so doing cause serious injury if you are standing in the wrong place at the right time. Remember to wear safety glasses and gloves.  Bill
