Cadillac Repair: want start, passkey systems, security failure


Question
a freind of mind in nc has a 93 eldrodo cad.,
his wife went to store came back and the car would
not start,this has a northstar eng,and a digal
read out ,iam some what a mechanic my self,but i can not figure this one out,first i thought it,had some to do with the security system,but ,
the read out says all wells,thought the key
went bad, but would it not say on read out security failure? could you give some other tips as what might be the problem,i know the stater is located under the intake manifold,but are they any were
else you can bypass the igntion switch to test the starter before takin every thing off? kinda
like the old days were you could jump with a screw
driver on the silnoid of a ford? or portable
starter button to bump starter thanks chip

Hi Chip, Its quite possable that the starter is bad. Look at the front of the rear valve cover and you should see a connector with a single purple wire. That leads to the starter solinoid. Unplug it and use a voltmeter or 12 volt test light and see if there is power there when the key is turned to start. If so then the starter is bad, If no power then put your foot on the brake and hold the key in the start position while moving the shifter from park to drive. If you get power then the neutral safty switch is out of adjustment. If no power then you will need to trouble shoot the starting and PASSKEY systems further which will require a manual or towing it to the shop. Hope that helps. Bill
