Cadillac Repair: Power Steering Hose Replacement, seville sts, power steering hose

Question
Could you describe how to replace the high pressure power steering hose?  I see the upper connection on the power steering pump.  Where does it connect to the rack and pinion assembly?  I have a 98 Seville STS.

Answer
Hi Dan, This isn't a hard job but it is one that requires the vehicle to be raised up in the air on propper jackstands or ramps and possably the rear of the engine cradle supported and lowered about 2-3 inches because where the hose ends up is on the drivers side just below where the steering column hooks up to the rack and there isn't alot of room to work in that area. Crows feet line wrenches and short wrenches come in handy  and if the line can't be loosened or your hand is too big to fit in that area then the cradle will definitely need to be supported and lowered. Also there is a heat shield by the exhaust pipe that has to be removed. Up top the power steering pump must be removed as well as the serpentine belt. Getting the tensioner released  might be tight. You will also need all metric sockets and wrenches except a 5/8" wrench for the line nut at the p/s pump. The best advise I can give is to raise the car on stands or ramps and crawl under there and see what you will be working with before buying the hose. The Northstar engine compartment is tight and it may be worth the extra money to have someone else install the hose. Good luck. Bill
