Cadillac Repair: Fan belt, fleetwood brougham, alternator belt

Question
I have a 1985 Fleetwood Brougham. The belt that goes from the crankshaft to the water pump to the air pump, broke. I attempted replacing it, however, niether of these pulley are adjustable. Could you give me a tip on how to replce this belt. Your expertise would be greatly appreciated, Ron.

Answer
Hi Ron, The A.I.R. pump belt is the adjustable one. First remove the alternator belt. Then to loosen the A.I.R. pump you will need a 15mm deep socket for the front bolts and a 15mm swivel socket for the rear bolt that holds the adjuster assembly. The car will need to be on jack stands or ramps for you to get under the car for the rear bolt and adjuster. You should completely remove the adjuster and place it in a vise and spray the screw with a rust penetrant and move the bolt back and forth until the bolt moves freely through its travel. Then reinstall the adjuster and then the belt. Leave the 15mm adjuster bolt just loose so it can slide on the bracket and turn the 13mm bolt from up top useing a swivel socket and long extension. Once the belt is tight so the alternator can't spin the pulley tighten the two 15mm bolts. Hope that makes sents. Bill
