Cadillac Repair: ABS for 92 Fleetwood (FWD), auto recycler, adjustable struts

Question
Hello Bill,
Just took my 92 Fleetwood to the Cadillac dealer here in NC and they say that I need EBTCM.  The estimate they gave me was 972.00 (ouch).  Do you know if I can buy the computer cheaper and install it myself?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I need to know if it's time to trade.  The car is clean as a "hound's tooth" in looks BUT now the suspension system needs repair (CRS light stays on all the time).  They told me it would cost 1,800.00 to get that repaired.  Now it's going to be another grand for this.  What do you think?

Thanks!

Clay

Answer
Hi Clay, I now work for a place that gets alot of parts from a junkyard/auto recycler and the EBTCM would be available for a fraction of the price and they aren't too hard to install. Why do they want to replace it because they don't go bad too often as it is usually a sensor that is defective or maybe a power relay? As for the suspension if you haven't had your struts converted over then installing non adjustable struts is alot cheaper and then just unplugging the computor. There was a bulletin out in 2000 that told the dealer tech what to do. Since the car is clean then now might be a good time to trade it in or sell it. The person apraising the car might overlook the light being on or you could take out the bulb for the CRS but if the brake light is on then that should be left alone or fixed. Bill
