Iam replacing the water pump on a 83 cadallic seville.I have to remove the power steering pump pulley to acess one of the bolts on the water pump. How do i get this pulley off. According to the haynes manual you need a special puller to get it off. There is a hex bolt in the center of the pulley.Do i remove this bolt or does the pulley just come off over the hex bolt.If i do manage to get it off how to i get it back on.The haynes manual doesn,t explain it very well. Can you help me please.

Hi Barry, What you need to do is phone around and see what auto parts stores near you have loaner tools. Auto zone does in my area. There is a special tool to remove the pulley and another one to install it. However you can get by with a long threaded bolt, washer and nut that gets screwed into the pump shaft and then turning the nut while you hold the bolt forces the pulley into place. The hex is for assembly at the p/s pump builder and the pulley comes off the shaft. The shaft threads have a tendancy to rust and the installer doesn't like to thread into the pump shaft so before removeing the pulley take a 3/8" by 16tpi tap and clean the threads while holding the pulley. You are right about the haynes being too general and omitting steps. If you plan on keeping your Caddy for awhile yet you might want to go to ebay and purchase a factory shop manual if one is available. Most times they can sell for $20 or less. Hope that helps.

Hi bill its me barry again. Thanks to your advice the water pump job is almost complete.I have another question for you regarding another problem with this car.Iam replacing the seal in the timing plate cover, the one which goes over the damper hub.Its been a couple of weeks since i removed the damper hub from the crank shaft.I have replaced the seal in the timing plate cover and iam now putting the damper hub back on the crank shaft. My question is how much space is there suppose to be left between the damper hub and the front timing plate cover. How far is the damper hub suppose to go on the crank shaft.when i installed it there is still a shiny section of the hub exposed. There is also a lip on the hub damper.Does it butt up against it.I know that the hub damper can only go on until it butts up against the end of the crank shaft but it seems like we are missing a piece. If this seems like a stupid question it probably is .Can you still help me.

Answer
Hi Barry, Tis better to ask questions now than to damage something later. And no question is stupid. The sequence of parts goes crank gear, oil shield/washer thing, timing cover and then the hub. You probably will have a shinny spot because if you installed the seal flush with the cover, Cadillac leaves it out alittle bit so if the seal wears a groove in the hub then the seal can ride in a differant spot when a new one is installed and not have to replace the hub. The hub will bottom out against the timing gear shield when installed correctly and then you will see a shinny spot. Sounds like you are getting it back together just fine. Remember to put the 6 pack of seal tabs in the radiator if you flush out the cooling system otherwise just pour in the antifreeze you drained out and you'll be just fine. They can be bought at the caddy dealer parts dept. Then once you are all back together change the oil before starting the engine because anti freeze has a way to get in the oil and that causes problems. Let me know if you need more help. Bill
