We have a 1995 Cadillac Sedan Deville that we recently bought.  It was fine and then it starting cutting off in the middle of driving.  We've replaced the fuel pump.  What else could it be?  We use the highest grade gas.  Could it be something electrical

Hi Rosalind, I am going to need some more info. What engine do you have? Does the service light turn on before cutting out? Does the engine miss or does the engine stop running while driving? Does it do this hot, cold or all the time? Does it start and run now or is it a crank no start? Let me know so I can better advise you. Bill

Bill,
My son actually drives the car.  19 yr old.  He's had it about a month now.  It's a 4.9 engine.  The engine light never comes on.  The car just cuts off in the middle of driving.  It does this regardless of whether or not the weather outside is warm or cold.  After it sits a several hours it will then crank up.  My son just advised me however that he's getting a message on the dash to "change the oil".  It has stopped several times, each time it would crank back up after it has sat idle several hours.  Could changing the oil, which is what he will do today, make such a drastic difference in this car's performance?  Thanks so much for your help

Answer
Hi Rosalind, Changeing the oil shouldn't make a differance with the stalling. However if the engine was idleing alittle rough and if there was alot of gas in the oil it might run smoother. Your problem could be related to the distributor module because when they heat up sometimes they go bad. You would need to check for spark and fuel pressure to determine what is missing. I have also seen where the wire harness inside the distributor goes open and will cause the engine to quit. Cadillac had some problems with the fuel pump and the wireing harness terminal. Sounds like you need to have a tech look at it because if you start replacing parts then it can get expensive in a hurry and the tests can involve costly equipment and dificult procedures. Bill
