Cadillac Repair: Power steering pump, 1985 Cad. Seville, Gas engine, power steering pump, lol hope

Question
The power steering pump on my Moms 85 gas engine Seville is leaking. The hoses and connections are good. It seems to be leaking behind the pulley, at the shaft. I can see one bolt that holds the pump to the block but can't seem to see the other. There are no access holes in the pulley so if there is another bolt behind it, I can't see it. Is replacing the pump a job that should be left to the Pros? Thanks for any help or advice that you can give!

Answer
Hi Bunky, This is a pretty easy job provided you have access to a pulley remover and installer. Check with the place where you buy your parts or I know auto zone in my area loans tools. Then it is a matter of removeing the pulley, disconnecting the line and hose and then the 2 pump bolts. We used to have to rebuild the pumps at the dealer but in your case installing a rebuilt pump is the way to go. Then reverse the procedure to install the pump. If the installer won't thread into the pump a 3/8" by 16tpi tap will help you out. Make sure you turn the steering wheel side to side about 10 times to purge the air from the pump and lines after adding fluid and watch the fluid level especially upon initial start-up. If you hear a whine noise turn the engine off and recheck the fluid level. Then cycle the steering wheel with the engine running several times to complete the air purgeing process. Raising the front end off the ground helps alot. Then I can call and ask you how to change the pump and you'll say piece of cake. lol   Hope that helps. Bill
