Cadillac Repair: squealing sporadically, fleetwood brougham, alternator pulley

Question
1986 Fleetwood Brougham with either 116,000 or 216,000 on it (only displays 5 numbers). I am using my boyfriend's car for a few weeks. It squeals like a pig when I accelerate, but NOT all the time. I could accelerate, brake, accelerate then it squeals. Brake, accelerate, no squeal..very sporadic, on and off squealing throughout the ride. I thought belts squeal continuously if they need a change. And how many belts does this car have altogether. Is it expensive to have them changed? One belt looks rippled, almost "toothed"...is that normal for this car? Otherwise very very quiet car. Thanks for information. He's too lazy to maintain this car properly.

Answer
Ribbed belts tend to wear much faster than the solid belts and I do NOT recommend ribbed belts for just this reason.

The squeel is in most cases caused by the belt that drives the alternator.

With the engine OFF and the KEYS in your POCKET, See if you can turn the alternator pulley by hand. If you CAN it needs to be tightened.
