Chevrolet Repair: motor wont ignite, 2007 chevy impala, jumper cables


Question
2007 Chevy Impala. Makes clicking sound when trying to start. Have cleaned posts with a wire brush cleaner tool. When jumping battery with cables, clicking noise gets louder (not faster). Motor will not even turn over. Lights and accessories work when jumper cables are attached. Not out of gas. Car sat idle for four days - then wouldn't start. Ideas?  (Weather here was around 18-24 degrees during this time.)

HI BILL,WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO IS GET YOUR SELF A VOLT METER AND CK THE BIG BATTERY CABLE AT THE CENTER OF THE STARTER POST, SHOULD HAVE BATTERY VOLTAGE HERE AT LEAST 12.4 VOLTS. NOW CK AGAIN AT THIS POST WHILE SOMEONE CRANKS THE ENG OVER WITH THE KEY SO YOU GET THE CLICKING SOUND. YOU SHOULD HAVE ABOUT 11.8 TO 12.2 VOLTS ANY THING LESS THEN THIS THE BATTERY IS BAD OR CONNECTION AT THE BATTERY OR STARTER ARE NOT AS CLEAN AS YOU THINK THEY ARE..THE FACT THAT WHEN YOU JUMP THIS THE CLICKING GETS LOUDER TO ME IT SOUNDS LIKE A BAD CONNECTION OR BATTERY PROBLEM..I KNOW YOU WOULD THINK THAT IF YOU JUMP IT THE VOLTAGE WILL GO TO THE STARTER. NOT SO ALL THE TIMES, YOU SEE IF THIS BATTERY IS REALLY BAD YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO JUMP THROUGH THE BAD BATTERY..SO CK VOLTAGE WHILE YOU ARE CRANKING IT OVER I BET YOU WILL SEE LOW VOLTAGE [SAY UNDER 8 OR 7 VOLTS ..BUT LETS SAY I AM WRONG AND YOU DO HAVE A GOOD VOLTAGE READING AT THE STARTER AS I SAID ABOVE WHILE CRANKING IT OVER,, IF THIS IS THE CASE THE STARTER IS BAD..[[[MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU TEST THIS WITH A VOLT METER THAT THE CONNECTIONS ARE GOOD AND CLEAN AND TIGHT.]]] BECAUSE IF THEY ARE NOT YOU WILL GET A FALSE READING WHICH WILL GIVE YOU A FAULTY DIAGNOSES..LET ME KNOW HOW YOU MAKE OUT AND GOOD LUCK TO YOU,,,TOM.

HI AGAIN BILL I HOPE YOU GET THIS BEFORE YOU REPLACE ANYTHING, IF YOU HAVE JUST UNDER 12 VOLTS AT THE STARTER WHILE TRYING TO CRANK THE ENG OVER 99.9 % IT IS THE STARTER. BUT HOW ABOUT SOMETHING HAS LOCKED UP THE ENGINE EITHER INTERANLLY OR EXTERNALLY ??? ANY PULLEY ON THIS ENG THAT IS LOCKED UP WILL ALSO CAUSE THIS PROBLEM,SUCH AS ALTERNATOR,POWER STEERING,AIR COND ETC.
REMOVE THE BELT AND PUT A BREAKER BAR ON THE CRANKSHAFT BOLT AND TRY TO TURN THE ENG OVER.IF IT TURNS OVER LIKE THIS AND YOU CAN SPIN ALL THE BELT PULLEY'S BY HAND EXCEPT THE CRANKSHAFT OF COURSE THEN IT IS THE STARTER. IF YOU CAN'T TURN THE ENG OVER LIKE THIS THE ENG IS LOCKED UP. LETS HOPE THIS IS NOT THE CASE !!!!
