Chevrolet Repair: 96 suburban, crank shaft, shimming

Question
My 96 suburban grinds when i try and start it. I have replaced the starter and tried shimming the starter. when i tighten it up works for a start or 2 then does it again.

Answer
Sounds like you have damaged teeth on the flywheel. An way to check that s to pull down the starter and while you look at the teeth of the flywheel, have someone turn the crank shaft with a socket and breaker bar. there is bolt right on the front of the engine that holds the harmonic balancer in, this is the bolt they need to use. If the teeth are damaged, you'll need to replace the flywheel.
