Chevrolet Repair: S10 signal problem, turnsignals, shorts

My boyfriend has a 98 s10 and just recently the signal lights stopped working, we checked the fuses but its not the problem, They don't work at all with the headlights on and sometimes they work backwards (when signaling to go right the left blinker comes on) Any ideas why or how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated

The first question is was anything added to the truck recently? radio, MP3 lights etc? If not then the next culprit would be the turn signal with in the column has shorted out and need to be replace. This is a pretty straight forward repair but he will need to take great car when working with the airbag in the steering wheel always follow directions to the letter as they can explode and cause serve injury. Yes I meant to scare you as airbags are dangerous if not handled properly ANY manual available in the auto parts store can walk you through it
