Chevrolet Repair: poor power steering at low rpms, power steering fluid, rack box

Question
i have a 1997 4 wheel drive 5.7 chevy,,cheyene,5 speed standard ,plain  3/4 ton pickup truck,,i have no power steering when trying to park it ,,rpm's are around 800 when parking ,,but when vehicle is cold the power steering is good ,,that is because the rpm's are much higher,,,i replaced the pump with a cardone rebuilt unit ,,it was good when installed ,just for a few hours ,,even felt too easy to turn at 50 miles per hour,,but then got normal ,,,except for the parking ,,,there is no sensor on the steering column ,only on the silverado model, that monitors drifting ,someone told me i might have a power steering control module under the dash,,,do you think i have another bad pump?,,also had the front tires off the ground ,engine off ,the wheels turn freely with no resistance,,, what do the 2 wires on the bottom of the pump do ?and how is it controlled ? thank you ,,,joe

Answer
Hi Joe... the wires off the pump are for the computer... are you using the right power steering fluid...does that modle have a rack or power steering box...if you changed the pump and you have good pressure i would suspect the rack/box...try flushing it...take the return line off the pump into a container and pour fluid in the pump while running and watch till you get good clean fluid...do not let pump run dry...attach line and refill, try it now...if still the same you may need to change the rack/power steering box....hope this helps
