Chevrolet Repair: 2000 chevrolet, push button switch, chevy trucks

Question
My 2000 chevy truck has push button 4 wheel drive, the lights dont light up on the push button and I cant get it to go into 4 wheel drive. My shhop ran the codes and came up with nothing, and suggested I replace the push button switch. The truck has only 47000 miles on it. Ialso have a service 4 wheel drive showing up in the message center. Should I change out the push button switch?

Answer
Hi Terry.... you won't get any codes for the 4x4 system... and the buttons are rarely the problem...you may need to change the 4x4 control module. depending on the model of the truck it is up under the dash. before changing it make sure you have power to the switch...if not check the fuses...what happens to them is if you don't use the 4x4 for a while the actuators on the transfer case and front axel will sometime get stuck...if you think they are.. lightly tap them with a hammer...check at the plugs for them and see if when you push the button you get power to them...if you do and they don't engauge they are stuck...if you don't and have power at the buttons then you need a module...the module is a common problem for the newer chevy trucks....once you get it fixed i reccomend you use the 4x4 in all ranges at least once a month and do it a couple times....hope this helps
