Chevrolet Repair: 91 GMC 1/2 ton, amy goodman, left hand side

Question
I went to start my truck when i noticed the ignition had been smashed out! SHIT!! what luck..
Anyways, I would like to get it down to my friends autobody shop, as he will repair the damage for a much cheaper price.
My friend told me depending on how smashed out the ignition is, and where its been hit, there may be a way of starting the truck with a screwdriver.  Its damage is on the left hand side of the steering column.. and i can see teeth and a pin thats coming from the part where the key goes in.  Sorry I cant explain it to well, but any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Answer
If the top is also smashed you may be able to start the truck.  You will need to make access to the right side of the column, pretty much making the top column cover useless to reuse.  You can start the truck with a screwdriver, but this is very hard to explain.  Right where the ignition switch goes into the column, you will see a gear(kinda) looking thing.  That is the release for the ignition.  If you are able to turn the gear you should be able to release the switch and start the truck.  It very hard to describe in words, im sorry for the inconvenience.
