Chevrolet Repair: 700R4 chev auto trans, throttle linkage, accelerator cable

Question
QUESTION: trans doesn't want to shift into overdrive.when I let off the throttle it goes into od but when throttle is applied it goes back into drive..changed trans filter and fluid,no change..

ANSWER: Hey,

You should check the adjustment of the detent cable.  The detent cable is on the throttle linkage and is connected to the transmission so the transmission can respond properly to throttle position.  The cable should be taught when the throttle is wide open. Driving with a broken cable will damage the transmission.

QUESTION: how do I adjust the detent cable???

Answer
Chevrolet Repair: 700R4 chev auto trans, throttle linkage, accelerator cable
Detent Cable
Hey,

The detent cable is self adjusting when installed.  Sometimes the ratcheting part of it will slip and come out of adjustment.  Look at the throttle body and find the accelerator cable.  The other cable is the detent cable and it pulls OUT when the throttle is opened.  On the other side of the mounting bracket there is a tab that you push in and then push in the end of the cable.  See attached photo I will make in paint.
Its very important that your detent cable is set properly because it is also responsible for line pressure when under load and if line pressure is low the clutches might slip and wear components out.
