Chevrolet Repair: 1977 Chev C10. 350 4 barrel, model a roadster, quadrajet

Question
Howie, my son (age 16) inherited this truck from my dad.  It had short block installed in 2003 and has about 3K miles on it since then.  It will start right up, but it idles very fast.  The idle then starts to drop until it cuts off.  The continues until it is warmed up, but the idle is set at about 2,500 rpm.  Been a long time since I worked on a Quadrajet.  Any suggestions on where to start?  The carb. model number is 17084230

Answer
Hey,

Start with lubricating the choke idle cam and make sure the choke unloader works.  It sounds like when the choke is coming on the cam is stuck and won't allow the unloader to work.  I used to rebuild them all the time but I never see them myself anymore.  At 80 bucks an hour people don't get too excited about a 4-5 hour rebuild with setu p time and I don't blame them.  I have a 1930 Model A Roadster, a 1971 Eldorado  Convertible so I am no stranger to carbs and finicky ones at that.  My Eldorado has a 500 CID with a quad on it and the cam gets stuck damn near every spring....
