Chevrolet Repair: pontiac transport brakes, pontiac transport, drum brakes

Question
Hi Wayne: I have a '98 Pontiac Transport (last year before Montana) It has ABS disc/drum brakes. Owned it approx 2 years, 220k on it. Great van except for maximum brake pedal travel. I have bleed  it several times but the pedal travels a long way before brake application. I replaced the front brake approx 10 months ago, the rear are still like new and the fronts are down to 35%. It doesn't seem like there is much rear brake action, but they are working. Could this be related to a faulty brake combination valve? We do go up the mountain skiing, but less than a year for a set of drilled/slotted rotors ans extreme duty pads seems kind of short, and it s always been the issue of the soft pedal. What are your thoughts?

Answer
Hey,

Are you saying you have drilled and slotted rotors?

Make sure the rear brakes are adjusted properly if they are drum brakes.  Co-efficient of friction is most likely your problem.  The rears only do 40percent of the braking but if they are not set up well you will have excessive pedal travel and shortened life of the front.
