distributor
Hi,

Disconnect battery.  Remove air intake tube assembly.  Mark and remove ignition wires from distributor cap.  Remove cap. Bring engine to TDC #1 before loosening distributor bolt where possible.  You should slide under vehicle and clean marks on harmonic balancer with light grade sandpaper and mark with a visible paint marker.
Looking straight down on the distributor you will want to make two marks.  Mark A will be where the case of the distributor aligns with the intake manifold.  Mark B will be where the rotor points.  Use a small straight edge and lie it on the rotor and find something that it points at.
Undo the bolt at the base of the distributor and twist the distributor a bit to break it free of the paper gasket.
Here is the tricky part.  When you pull up on the distributor two things are going to happen that are out of your control. A: The rotor will begin to turn.  Don't worry, its the helical gear that is driven by the camshaft to turn the distributor shaft.  B: The oil pump gear will turn a little smidgen back and then stop when it disengages from the pump drive.  This will make it difficult to get the distributor back in exactly the same place because the pump drive no longer lines up with the camshaft gear.  If you take a long screwdriver you can go down the distributor hole and turn the oilpump drive 1/8 of an inch back so when you put the distributor back in it will drop into place.  It sounds very complicated but it isn't.  You can not even touch the oil pump gear and you should be able to get the distributor back in.  It might resist going in all the way and if the distributor is 1/4 of an inch off of the intake and won't go in anymore its because it isn't engaging the oil pump drive.
When you are installing the new distributor be sure to start out a little turned back because the helical gears will cause the distributor to turn in while you drop it down.  Make sure everything line up perfectly and re-assemble.  You may get a check engine light and cam/crank synch may have to be done after that.  Make sure you check timing with a quality timing gun.
