Chevrolet Repair: central port injection 4.3 L 1995 astro, fuel pressure regulator, service mechanic

QUESTION: The gas mileage has dropped to 10 mpg and I was told that the cpi unit needed replacing and have gas leaking into oil.could just replacing the  Fuel Pressure Regulator be the answer? Thank you Chris

ANSWER: Hey,

 By the description it sounds like one of the plastic injector lines are leaking. They are available seperately.
Replace them all? I don't ususally.

QUESTION: Wayne,My local service mechanic quoted to replace the entire cpi unit for $1000?,Replacing just the leaking one sounds better.I'm just a little hesitant on a 1995 with 105,000 miles although the body is in excellent shape.Would you? Thank You very much! Chris

 105miles on a 4.3 isn't bad at all.  We get them in with 300 plus on a regular basis.  Has he told you why you need to replace the entire CPI unit?  Is it because they are already in there or was there a fire inside the intake.  I have seen this happen before and melt all of the lines.  The upper half of the intake comes off and you can buy the injector separately.  Is this what he is suggesting:
