Chevrolet Repair: potential fuel pump failure on s10, chevy s10, intermittent sound

Question
Wayne..

I own a 2000 Chevy S10 2.2L LS model. It has 92,000 miles and seems to be running great with the exception of a very loud humming, intermittent sound coming from inside the fuel tank. It's loud enough to be heard inside the cab with windows closed and sounds mutch like a meowing cat? It does not make the sound upon startup, but after the engine has fully warmed up, and particularly in heavy traffic.  Im thinking it's the fuel pump, and if so should I change It before I'm left stranded or is there another cause?

Answer
Hey,

If the fuel filter is plugged the pump may be underrunning.  The best way to test a GM pump is with an oscilloscope and a low amperage probe.  If the windings and brushes are ok noise is somethign you can live with.
Ask a shop to do a waveform analysis on your fuel pump.  If they don't know how, call another shop that does.  It is a test that really good technicians use to test fuel pump integrity.
