Chevrolet Repair: chevy express van wont start, vortec engine, chevy express

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a 2001 Chevrolet Express Van, it has a 4.3 V6 engine. The other morning it was really cold out and would not start. It still had the original battery in it so I put a new one in and it still won't start. It acts like it wants to turn over but does not. Thought you might know what could be causing this. P.S. I had a new fuel pump put in this past summer. Thanks.

ANSWER: Hey Dwight,

When you say it doesn't turn over do you mean that the starter does not engage or the engine spins but won't catch?

QUESTION: I think the engine spins but won't catch. The starter engages for about 3-4 seconds then you hear the engine spin then kind of stop and that's it. Thanks.

Answer
Hey,

Sounds like the engine is catching and kicking out the bendix on the starter.  A 2001 vortec engine needs to have 55psi fuel pressure to start.  The injectors are poppets with spring loaded ends that will not open under 55psi.  I know you mentioned that you had a fuel pump replaced lately but should also make sure the filter is new.  I hate to say this but I had a rash of fuel pumps go bad last year from Car Quest (please don't sue me CQ, I still buy parts from you!).
The next step is to check fuel pressure at the schreader on the fuel rail.  If it is anything less than 55psi its the pump.  Try cycling the key to help prime the rail.  On for two seconds, off for two seconds, on for two seconds, then crank.  If that doesnt work look under the truck and give the fuel tank a boot with your heel. That will send a shockwave through the fuel and might free up the pump enough to move it an armature over to get it going.
