Chevrolet Repair: rear main seal for a 1990 chevy s10 4x4, chevy s10, lip seals

Question
looking to replace the rear main seal, just wondering what the going price is. Also I have done some repair work myself on the truck, starter, exhaust manifold gasket, water pump, power steering pump, brakes, is this something I could tackle with my manual?

Answer
Hey,

Knowing the engine displacement would be helpful but if it is 4.3 4x4 with automatic it pays 7.9 hours mitchel time.  I would discourage replacement of this seal if you have not done many lip seals in the past.  Its important to check the sealed component for end play as well.   You should check crankshaft deflection (fore to aft) movement to ensure you are not wasting your time.  As with all repairs there is a cause and effect.  Most naturally the seal gets old and contracts not having the tension on the crank anymore but if the deflection is excessive the crank could be wiping the lip seal out.
If you give me more specifics I will give you a complete Removal and Replacement procedure.
