Chevrolet Repair: 1997 Astro Van - rear door latch, latch releases, door latch

The rear door handle on our van has broken (it won't open the door).  I've taken the rear panel off of the door but still can't get to the latching mechanism.  Any suggestions.

Is this the hatch door?  There should be a cable with a handle somewhere accessible to override the latch.  You pull this and the door latch releases.  

If that is not found, look for a metal rod that leads to the broken handle.  pull this in the direction it would go if you operated the broken handle.  

Try disconnecting the broken handle by unbolting it from inside the door, or outside if bolts are accessible.  Once disconnected, you will see a rod there.  Use pliers and pull it.  

Make sure you didn't inadvertently lock the door during your work.  It may not operate if the door is locked.
