Chevrolet Repair: catalytic converter, illustration book, test community

my check engine light has been on for several week ,my truck was scanned and they said it came up catalytic converter needs to be replaced. I need illustration book to see if I can do it my self -very expensive can tou refer me to such  illustration book

catalytic converter is inline in the exhaust.  It looks like a muffler and is closer to the motor.  On some cars the CAT has an air pump pipe.  

To replace this you take the old one down and put the new one up.  This is usually in the stainless steel area of the exhaust (on new cars), and probably needs to be cut out and welded in.  

Depending on your car's age, and if you live in a test community, you may be able to replace the CAT with a piece of pipe.  

Other than letting a little 'CO' through there is really no rush to replace this part.  If it were plugged, that would be different.
