Chevrolet Repair: brake line repair 1972 chevy nova 4 door sedan, 1972 chevy nova, chevy nova

Question
I am very close to buying the Nova, the only problen with it is that it needs the brake line on the passenger side replaced. Is this something I can do myself? I am very mechanically inclined. I'm just not sure about the bleeding part. What do you think?

Answer
I don't know price or condition.  I do know brake line replacement is simple.  Definately not a reason to not buy a car.

You bleed from the bleeder fittings.  They are usually 3/8", 5/16", 11mm, 10mm, 8mm.  You use a socket and loosen and tighten them a crack only.  If the bleeder won't turn, it is frozen.  Try penetrating oil.  If you cannot get it to turn or break it due to age, you need new wheel cylinder/caliper.  So be careful.

Once the lines are installed, which is mostly obvious, you want to bleed the system.  Top off the master cylinder.  You will use at lease a pint of brake fluid.  Start at the wheel as far away from the master cylinder as possible (usually the pass. rear).  Have an assistant pump the brake pedal once and hold it.  YOu loosen the bleeder and let the air out.  Then retighten and the assistant then releases the brake pedal.  Do this over and over.  It will be air only at first.  Then a spray of air and fluid.  Then finally just fluid.  When you get just fluid, you move to the next closest wheel (driver rear).  Repeat the proceedure.  Remember to check the master cylinder level often.
