Chevrolet Repair: 2000 silverado service engine soon light, light thanks, scan tool

Question
My owners manual gives a cause for "service engine soon" light as "replacing tires with specificatons that are different from the original specifications" I replaced m tires recently with tires the same as the original and soon after my service engine light came on. How could replacing the tires cause the computer to generate an error code to turn on the light. Thanks for any help

Answer
Hi James,

The sophistication of today's cars always amaze me.  It is noticing that your tires are causing more load than before.  It is assuming the tires are different.  In essence it is right.  New tires have more tread and therefore will take slightly more effort to turn and take longer to complete a cycle.

I bet the computer needs to be told you changed the tires.  There must be a reset you can access by using the scan tool.  Simular to your printer when you replace the ink.  If you don't tell some printers, it will keep thinking the ink is low.

Remember the goal of the computer is not to waste gas or pollute.  Bigger tires to the computer is a pollution hazard.
