Chevrolet Repair: Lumina Transmission, turbo hydramatic, transaxles

Question
I have a 1995 Lumina with a 3.4 that has a bad transmission.  I want to know if the transmission out of a 1997 Lumina with a 3.1 will interchange.

Answer
well it all depends on the to cars. the two most commonly used transaxles in the lumina's were the Turbo-Hydramatic 3T40 and the Hydramatic 4T60-E (electronic). If you have a 3spd then odds are you have a 3T40 and thats what you'll need to replace it with. the 4t60-e is an electronically controled transaxle and you will have much trouble triing to inter-change a 3t40 to a 4t60-e, and vice versa. But if you do have the same tranny in each one, the year and engine shouldn't make any difference. another thing to watch for is the shape of the tranypan. they should be same or it could cause mounting problems. hope this helps.
